Two Million and counting

The SugarForge community has just achieved a significant milestone:  SugarForge has surpassed the 2 million download mark!

It is doubtful there is a more meaningful sign of the strength and vitality of the Sugar community.

Let's take a moment to review some other interesting factoids to illustrate the momentum of the Sugar community:

  • SugarForge serves up 2.5 million site visits and 200K downloads a month. To put this in perspective, we’ve had more downloads already this month than in the entire month of April 2005.
  • 23 new SugarForge projects were created in July, up from 14 in June, and is indicative of commitment from the community.
  • In the Forums we’re setting a blistering pace as well. The Release 4.5 Community Preview forum alone has almost 100 threads with 433 posts and has been instrumental in guiding that release effort.

The Sugar team deeply appreciates the energy, drive and commitment of its community.

SugarForge restructure

Speaking of SugarForge, we're well into a restructuring project that is targeted for completion (surprise!) in time for the LinuxWorld show in San Francisco. Lam and Julian are furiously working to meet this deadline!

This restructuring is important to you, the SugarForge developer, because there is a hefty dose of visibility given to you for your efforts both in SugarForge and the Forums.

Here are some of the categories we're highlighting on the front page of the new release:
  • Top Rated SugarForge Developer
  • Top Forum Posters This Month
  • Most Active Developers This Month

In order for you to grab a chunk of the spotlight be sure to update your SugarForge and Forums profiles, making certain the email address you use is consistent in both. We'll use your email address to "join" your data from the two systems.

Also, because the work you do factors into your reputation and standing in the community, be sure to have your family and friends update your developer ratings (example) and to write rave reviews of your projects. In fact, Julian is cooking up an algorithm that incorporates 9 separate variables that influence your standing in the community. Even the ratings you provide other developers increase your standing.

The Wiki is coming, the Wiki is coming!

Yes, for real, the launch date of the
SugarWiki is this coming Monday, August 7th. Really. Honest.

We've been busy stuffing content into SugarWiki over the past several weeks and our plan is to continue doing so forever!  kbrill and stevec have helped us prime the pump as well. Thanks, Ken and Steve!

Going forward we essentially leave SugarWiki in the capable hands of the community and will play only a moderating role. Virtually all pages will be wide open to the entire community for input and editing. We'll only come by every so often to sweep things up a little. (We've set up a forum for SugarWiki as well.)

So, like SugarForge and the Forums, the new SugarWiki will only be as good as your level of involvement and commitment.

Oh, and did we mention that SugarWiki participation will be the 10th variable that Julian includes in his magic ranking formula?

August Project of the Month

YashOffice

YashOffice, a project that integrates Sugar with NetOffice, gets the nod as this month's project of the month.

We noted the flurry of activity when this project was launched and decided to take a closer like. We were impressed by the capabilities we found. Take a look for yourself in this recorded demo/interview.

Congratulations to Jason Wilcox and his team.

Interview with

Ryuhei Uchida of Carebrains

We've begun a series of interviews with important community members. What better way to learn about the experiences of others in the Sugar community?

Our first interview is with Ryuhei Uchida of Carebrains, a Sugar partner. "ruchida" as he is known  on the forums is a Prolific Poster and administrator of the Japanese Language Pack project. He and Carebrains have also produced a book about SugarCRM for the Japanese market. In his spare time he manages an independent Japanese language forum for SugarCRM users. Recently Ryuhei has been instrumental in helping us verify the internationalization aspects of Release 4.5.

In the interview (click to listen, MP3 format), you'll learn how Ryuhei balances his time amongst these endeavors and how Release 4.5 will greatly ease his efforts.

SugarExchange is where Sugar users, administrators, and business owners browse, download and purchase among the hundreds of items made available via Sugar developers. SugarExchange complements SugarForge by providing an attractive, user-centric directory of items created by SugarForge developers.

SugarExchange update

SugarExchange has received virtually no fanfare to date as it is in a beta test period and yet we have already seen a lot of interest from SugarForge developers. In fact, we have 14 paid listings across 7 providers on top of the 30+ freely downloadable items from earlier.

We plan a big splash with SugarExchange in a few weeks once we iron out a few more bugs and implement a feature or two.
