The Sugar Community and 4.5
Release 4.5 is out and what a release it is! With a new dashlets framework and other UI enhancements, support for Microsoft SQL Server, internationalization and more, Release 4.5 is truly a groundbreaking release. No less groundbreaking was how much the Sugar Community played a vital role in the success of the release. We can't thank you enough for the hard work and dedication you exhibited. The open development process began more than 4 months ago when we started the Community Preview forum to allow feedback on release content. Then in late May we provided the first of several Community Preview on-demand releases which were then followed by full-on beta releases. In all there were 3 CP releases and 3 cycles of downloadable betas followed by several incremental updates -- all in the open and each with plenty opportunity for community input and guidance. True to form, the Sugar Community came through. The forums now contain 220 threads and more than 1000 posts. Several Sugar community members, especially ruchida and malcolmh, worked tirelessly on internationalization issues (and more). A hat tip goes to george_bbch, WeBoat and stevec for their input as well, and to all the others along the way. Overall, we cannot overstate the importance of your feedback in the creation of Release 4.5. SugarForge updateLook out for some more changes to SugarForge site in response to your feedback. We're trading in the Flash area for an announcements area (no advertising) and will emphasize project news items more prominently. Also, be sure to visit the SugarForge Communications page the we continue to stuff it full of interviews with leading SugarForge project developers. We want SugarForge to be as productive a workspace as possible so please continue to comment on SugarForge (and other Sugar sites) here in the Forums. Developer/User GroupOur intrepid Help Forum moderator, Ken Brill (kbrill), and the ever-diligent Max, known as umeco, have taken the lead on producing a Sugar developer/user group. Their thread and subsequent poll began the ball rolling a short while ago. With Sugar providing logistical support, we plan to crank the first developer-oriented online sessions in the early November timeframe. Over time these will expand to incorporate power user and administrative topics. We're also planning to conduct on-site events at major metropolitan areas starting early next year. A schedule of upcoming events will soon be published on SugarForge so stay tuned for more about this exciting venture. And many thanks, Ken and Max, for your leadership in this process. |
